Le Singe qui regardait l’étoile est un livre à part dans l’œuvre de Bernard Descamps. Le photographe nous a habitués à son style en noir et blanc, carré, épuré, graphique, d’un doux classicisme, marqué par l’Afrique. Or voici une série de photographies en couleurs, rarement carrées, souvent fidèles à la douceur mais sachant être acidulées, et plus mondiales qu’africaines – encore que cette question ne soit ici pas essentielle, les légendes nous étant données en fin d’ouvrage par simple rigueur photographique. « Je n’ai pas d’idée préconçue sur ce que je vais photographier, c’est en marchant que je rencontre des choses », disait-il à l’occasion de sa dernière exposition au Château d’eau de Toulouse en 2020.
Voilà 50 ans que Bernard Descamps marche, et ce faisant qu’il photographie ce qu’il rencontre. Nourri par une traversée de ses innombrables archives, Le Singe qui regardait l’étoile est un conte narré de deux manières : par les images anciennes et par les mots récents qu’elles ont inspirés. Une histoire qui parle du visible, de l’invisible, du temps, des apparences, de la réalité des choses qui nous entourent… et qui pose cette question : peut-on raconter exactement la même histoire de deux manières différentes, par l’image et par le texte ? Question que connaissent bien les traducteurs – et tentative de réponse, avec sa fausse naïveté, que n’aurait sans doute pas désavouée un Raymond Queneau.
