«J’ai commencé à photographier des musiciens en 1975, en fait c’étaient mes colocataires, le mouvement punk venait de naître, alors parfois je les prenais en photo… Mais à San Francisco, c’était particulier.
On appelait ça “Art and Music”: The Mutants, The Dills, Flipper, Crime, SVT, The Yanks, Tuxedo Moon, The Tubes, Los Lobos, The Avengers, Dead Kennedys et Romeo Void, U2. Beaucoup d’entre eux étaient étudiants au San Francisco Art Institute. Les membres de The Mutants et de Romeo Void, bien sûr. Chris Isaac des Silver Tones, aussi, et Bonnie Hayes and The Wild Bunch – Bonnie Hayes, l’une des filles les plus géniales de la scène punk.
J’étais entouré de ces groupes de rock, à la fois punks et artistes. Tout à coup ces groupes ont voulu des images. Ils m’appellent et me disent: “Stanley, je sais que tu as des photos, tu sais, tel magazine veut faire un article sur nous, etc.”
Et sans m’en rendre compte, je suis devenu photographe professionnel alors que toujours étudiant en art… À l’agence VU, quand je suis arrivé, ils voulaient ces photos, les photos punk ; un assistant m’a alors demandé où se trouvaient les planches-contacts. Mais il n’y avait pas de planche-contact».
