Publié pour la première fois en 1996 avec un énorme succès, Ray’s a Laugh de Richard Billingham est l’un des livres de photos les plus importants du début du vingtième siècle, ainsi qu’une œuvre fondamentale de la génération des Young British Artists. Composé d’images intimes et brutales de la maison parentale de Billingham, souvent chaotique, sous l’effet de l’alcoolisme et de la pauvreté, le livre a été réalisé dans les années 1990 avec les éditeurs Michael Collins et Julian Germain. Cette nouvelle édition restitue pour la première fois la vision originale de Billingham pour son travail profondément personnel. Elle comprend de nombreuses images inédites et une approche distincte du séquençage, influencée par la formation de peintre de Billingham : il s’agit d’un “director’s cut” qui réintroduit une œuvre vitale et constamment stimulante dans une nouvelle ère. La publication de cette nouvelle édition s’accompagne de Ray’s a Laugh : A Reader, édité par Liz Jobey, qui retrace l’histoire passionnante du livre, de la “découverte” de Billingham à l’université de Sunderland à la présente édition retravaillée.
