En 1950, Elliott Erwitt, qui n'avait alors que vingt-deux ans, a entrepris de photographier la transformation de Pittsburgh, qui était une ville industrielle, en une métropole moderne. Mandaté par Roy Stryker, le maître d'œuvre des projets de photographie documentaire à grande échelle lancés par le gouvernement américain pendant la Grande Dépression, Erwitt a pris des centaines de clichés. Ses images ont enregistré les communautés de la ville sur fond de changement urbain, soulignant ses observations tranquilles avec l'esprit ludique qui a défini son style pendant plus de cinq décennies. Après seulement quatre mois, Erwitt a été appelé sous les drapeaux et envoyé en Allemagne. Pendant des décennies, les négatifs ont été conservés au département de la Pennsylvanie de la Carnegie Library de Pittsburgh, ce qui explique que la majorité des photographies présentées dans ce livre n'ont jamais été publiées ni exposées auparavant.
