Salt & Truth est le quatrième livre du photographe amérricain Shelby Lee Adams (1950-present). Cette collection de 80 nouvelles photographies, prises sur une période de 8 ans, prolonge le projet sur lequel l'artiste travaille depuis 30 ans. Rassemblées, ces images des habitants de l'est du Kentucky apportent un regard sur un monde historiquement réticent aux étrangers, par un photographe reconnu par le milieu photographique.

Depuis la publication de son dernier livre, Appalachian Lives (2003), Adams a continué à enrichir son extraordinaire corpus d'œuvres. Né à Hazard, dans le Kentucky, et élevé dans une vallée semblable à celles décrites dans le livre, le lien entre Adams et les personnes qu'il photographie transparait dans la manière dont il a été ouvertement accueilli dans leurs maisons et leurs vies. Adams, avec son appareil photo 4×5, est autorisé à pénétrer dans l'espace personnel de ses sujets, en tant que témoin des moments de fête comme des moments difficiles. Les photographies de cette collection représentent des enfants et des animaux, des personnes âgées, des travailleurs, et et dans d'autres mesures, avec éloquence, des questions plus larges de la foi, du respect et de la compassion, alors que beaucoup d'autres n'auraient vu que la pauvreté et le désespoir.
