Catalogue d'une exposition au C/o Berlin (printemps 2023) puis à la Fundacion Mapfre (2024), Mystery of the Ordinary saisit toute l'ampleur de l'évolution d'Eggleston : des premières œuvres en noir et blanc de la fin des années 1950, avec son exploration de thèmes et de cadrages nouveaux, à certaines de ses images couleur les plus emblématiques. Bien que le premier film couleur soit arrivé sur le marché en 1935, il était réservé au monde de la publicité, et jusqu'aux années 1980, il était encore considéré comme commercial et vulgaire. Malgré cela, avec Saul Leiter, Evelyn Hofer et Stephen Shore, Eggleston a été l'un des premiers photographes à reconnaître dès les années 1960 le pouvoir distinctif de la couleur et sa capacité unique à créer des images qui réinventent le quotidien. Cette exposition rend compte de ce bouleversement opéré en partie par William Eggleston.
