Depuis trois générations, la famille Fukase dirige un studio de photographie à Bifuka, une petite ville provinciale de la province d'Hokkaido, au nord du Japon. En août 1971, à l'âge de 35 ans, Masahisa Fukase revient de Tokyo, où il s'était installé dans les années 1950. Il se rend compte que le studio photographique Fukase, géré par son jeune frère, ainsi que les membres de la famille qui s'agrandissent, constituent le sujet idéal pour une série de portraits. Entre 1971 et 1989, il y est retourné régulièrement et a utilisé le studio familial, l'appareil photo grand format Anthony et la composition familiale changeante comme base de la série. Fidèle à son style, Fukase introduit souvent des modèles tiers et des éléments humoristiques pour juxtaposer la réalité inéluctable du temps qui passe et du groupe familial qui s'amenuise. Il a poursuivi la série après la mort de son père en 1987, jusqu'à la fermeture du studio Fukase pour cause de faillite en 1989, et la dispersion de la famille qui en a résulté.
