Pour le grand public, Andy Summers est le génial guitariste et compositeur du groupe mythique The Police, l’un des plus connus au monde. Parallèlement à son activité musicale, Summers a cependant construit une oeuvre photographique unique, contrepartie mentale et visuelle de sa musique, marquée par une recherche mélodique complexe, des harmonies aux couleurs plutôt mélancoliques, voire convulsives. Les sujets photographiques qu’il privilégie – activités des métropoles américaines ou japonaises, rues fascinantes des cités sudaméricaines… – appartiennent principalement à cette frange du surréalisme urbain, si chère aux écrivains français André Breton et Louis Aragon, qui en ont exploré l’étrangeté fructueuse. Le style photographique d’Andy Summers touche à cette « inquiétante étrangeté » dont parle Sigmund Freud, sentiment d’anxiété face à un domaine familier semblant soudain masquer un secret générateur d’angoisse.
Summers apparaît comme un guetteur nostalgique, désireux de soustraire les derniers éclats poétiques ou les secrets insolites d’un monde encore diversifié, enregistré avant sa liquidation finale engagée par la globalisation.
