Dandaka est le quatrième volet du projet au long-cours de Vasantha Yogananthan, A Myth of Two Souls, qui propose une relecture contemporaine du Ramayana. Épopée constituée de 7 chapitres et attribuée au poète Valmiki, le Ramayana, composé il y a plus de deux mille ans, est l’un des textes fondamentaux de la mythologie hindoue.
Depuis 2013, Vasantha Yogananthan parcourt l’Inde du nord au sud, retraçant l’itinéraire emprunté par les héros de l’épopée. Entre fiction et réalité, il brouille volontairement les lignes en multipliant les approches : photographies couleur, photographies repeintes, photographies illustrées composent les couches d’un récit intemporel.
A la fin du troisième chapitre (Exile), Lakshmana coupe le nez de Surpanakha. Dévasté de voir sa sœur défigurée, Ravana, le roi du Sri Lanka, réfléchit à sa vengeance. Rama et Lakshmana ne se doutent pas que leur acte barbare – la mutilation d’une femme – a scellé le destin de Sita. Le quatrième chapitre raconte l’enlèvement de Sita par Ravana. Cet opus mélange des extraits de la bande dessinée du Ramayana, publiée dans les années 1970, aux photographies de Vasantha Yogananthan.
Le projet A Myth of Two Souls fera l’objet de 7 livres publiés au rythme de deux par an jusqu’en 2020, aux éditions Chose Commune.
