Early Times est le premier volet du projet au long-cours de Vasantha Yogananthan, A Myth of Two Souls, qui propose une relecture contemporaine du Ramayana. Epopée constituée de 7 chapitres et attribuée au poète Valmiki, le Ramayana, composé il y a plus de deux mille ans, est l’un des textes fondamentaux de la mythologie hindoue.

Depuis 2013, Vasantha Yogananthan parcourt l’Inde du nord au sud, retraçant l’itinéraire emprunté par les héros de l’épopée. Entre fiction et réalité, il brouille volontairement les lignes en multipliant les approches : photographies couleur et noir et blanc, photographies repeintes, photographies illustrées et images vernaculaires composent les couches d’un récit intemporel.

Ce premier livre est celui du commencement : il raconte la jeunesse et l’éducation de Rama, fils du roi Dasharatha et Sita, fille du roi Janaka – qui ne se connaissent pas encore mais qui seront destinés à se rencontrer et s’aimer. Dans la lignée du livre illustré, Vasantha Yogananthan a invité Mahalaxmi et Shantanu Das, artistes indiens dans la tradition de la peinture de Madhubani, à réaliser des illustrations originales qui entrent en dialoguent avec son travail photographique. L’écriture du premier chapitre de cette épopée – sans cesse ré-interprétée à travers les âges – a été confiée à l’écrivain Anjali Raghbeer.

Le projet A Myth of Two Souls fera l’objet de 7 livres publiés au rythme de deux par an jusqu’en 2020, aux éditions Chose Commune.
