Motel 42 est une série d’autoportraits réalisée aux États-Unis sur film noir et blanc par Eloïse Labarbe-Lafon. Chaque photo a été tirée puis colorée à la peinture à l’huile. Eloïse a rejoint son compagnon musicien lors d'une tournée aux États-Unis et y a découvert un monde vu seulement dans les films : les motels américains. La photographe a souhaité documenter les 42 chambres dans lesquelles ils ont dormi, matin après matin. Tout ce qu’elle souhaitait montrer était ce que qu’elle pouvait trouver dans ces chambres, et ce qu’elle pourrait en faire ensuite avec ses pinceaux. L’idée derrière ce projet était de montrer l’intimité, l’intérieur, le silence de ce voyage bouleversant. Eloïse a créé des compositions picturales, utilisant son corps comme fil rouge tout en capturant l’âme de chaque espace ; un grand-huit à la fenêtre, une lumière suggérant une fin du monde enflammée ou l’arrivée d’un ange derrière une vitre, de la peau, de l’amour et de la solitude. Avec l’usage de la couleur, elle a transformé ces chambres grises et sales en des mondes étranges et précieux.
