" De sa sanglante guerre civile (1989-2003), le Libéria ne parle pas. Aucun mémorial n'a été édifié, aucune journée n'est dédiée à commémorer. Encore tenu par certains protagonistes du carnage, le pays se refuse toujours à condamner ses bourreaux. Ce silence, amplifié par un mutisme international, balaye toute reconnaissance sociale de la tragédie et renie l'essence même d'une mémoire collective, générant un profond sentiment d'abandon doublé d'une résignation somnolente. Le traumatisme d'une population entière se cristallise dans une société aux fondations d'argile et transpire sur une nouvelle génération à l'avenir trouble.

Le travail photographique et sonore d'Elliott Verdier s'est étalé sur deux ans. Les prises de vue ont été réalisées sur l'ensemble du territoire, des mines de diamants de Gbarpolu au port de pêche de Harper, en passant par l'immense bidonville de Westpoint. Les photographies argentiques, faites à la chambre 4x5, offrent deux séquences entremêlées, l'une en noir & blanc et l'autre en couleur. S'y ajoutent des enregistrements réalisés en studio où l'on écoute la voix de femmes et d'hommes, victimes ou bourreaux, qui narrent leurs destins abîmés.

Les monochromes sont des images contextuelles, sombres et énigmatiques, qui plantent le décor des portraits en couleurs. Ces n&b sont une référence à la nuit, souvent présente dans les témoignages et décrite comme le moment où le traumatisme devient palpable. Ils distillent une atmosphère pesante et propagent le silence étouffant qui règne sur le pays. De ce silence émergent les mots restitués des enregistrements, sur des calques, comme pour venir consteller de murmures inaudibles cette nuit libérienne. "
