Le livre Graffiti, s’il fait référence au mouvement artistique urbain apparu dans les années 70 à New York, explore surtout notre rapport à la ville. C’est l’acte de marquer de son nom celle ci, de répéter son tag sur un territoire, d’affirmer son existence qui intéresse Antonio Xoubanova. Ce dernier dissèque ce moyen de ré-articuler le paysage urbain, de gagner l’attention à la concurrence de la publicité et de la signalétique. Il insiste sur la multiplication et la redondance d’une indispensable affirmation de soi, dans une séquence faussement chaotique et une forme de livre qui en echo au graffiti s’affranchit des règles (pas de couverture, reliure apparente, mise en page déstructurée). Il en résulte un objet que l’on peut qualifier de baroque. Le fruit de quatre années de prises de vues et d’une longue collaboration avec le graphic designer David Mozzeta.

Antonio Xoubanova est membre de Blank Paper, un collectif de photographes qui s’est établi à Madrid au début des années 2000 pour développer et mettre en valeur son travail et créer un espace intellectuel commun. Depuis, leur photographie n’a cessé d’évoluer à travers une pratique dont les principales caractéristiques sont la collaboration et l’échange. Loin des cercles et des institutions artistiques officielles, ces photographes ont réussi à tisser un réseau indépendant de production, d’exposition et de diffusion basé sur la solidarité.
