Présence
L’oeuvre de John Batho (né en 1939) nécessite de voir au-delà de l’apparente simplicité de ses images. Le photographe mène depuis plus de cinquante ans une observation minutieuse du monde qui l’entoure. Comme un enfant qui découvrirait à chaque instant la richesse des couleurs et des effets de la lumière, John Batho — fasciné par le pouvoir de captation de l’appareil photo — tente de retenir la présence physique de son environnement immédiat. C’est dans l’intimité de sa Normandie natale qu’il réalise ses premières photographies en 1961. Tout entier disposé à la poésie des choses simples, son regard se pose sur les détails qui suscitent en lui une émotion : un pull rouge se détachant sur un ciel bleu, des oranges posées sur une table de la même couleur, les teintes délicates d’un mur coloré de Burano. Progressivement, cette approche photographique va affirmer sa propre langue. À rebours de ses contemporains français pour qui photographie d’auteur rime avec noir et blanc, John Batho va explorer les multiples enjeux de la photographie couleur. Une observation simple s’impose à lui : « Il y a un effet de la couleur par contamination. Vous mettez une image en couleurs à côté d’une autre et il se passe des interactions » constate-t-il. Passant de la diapositive Kodachrome au tirage Fresson, du Cibachrome à l’impression numérique jet d’encre, John Batho aime explorer de nouveaux territoires. « Dès mes premiers travaux, j’ai compris l’importance des procédés et des supports restituant l’image photographique, surtout lorsque celle-ci est en couleur, car la perception de l’image et de ses couleurs est déterminée par le matériau d’inscription. » La modernité de son oeuvre se loge précisément ici, dans sa capacité à interroger sans cesse la nature profonde et la présence de la photographie. John Batho est né en Normandie en 1939. Il commence à photographier en 1961. A partir de 1963, il entreprend une recherche dont le résultat fera apparaître une vision personnelle de la couleur. Suivront de nombreuses expositions qui assureront à son travail une diffusion internationale. De 1983 à 1990, John Batho est chargé de cours à l’Université Paris VIII. De 1992 à 2001, il enseigne à l’École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Dijon. Ses oeuvres sont présentes dans de nombreuses collections publiques et privées en France et à l’étranger.
