Couleur ou noir et blanc ?

Nous sommes en 1962 et le jeune Joel Meyerowitz ne sait pas encore que cette simple question du vendeur de pellicules photo va le plonger dans d’intenses réflexions esthétiques, voire métaphysiques. La couleur fait à l’époque l’objet d’un préjugé tenace : désignée comme vulgaire, elle est alors réservée aux amateurs et à la publicité, a contrario du noir et blanc considéré comme « noble ».

Nourri par ses discussions passionnées avec ses amis photographes Tony Ray-Jones et Garry Winogrand, Meyerowitz cherche son vocabulaire et commence alors à photographier en parallèle avec deux boîtiers, l’un pour le noir et blanc, l’autre pour la couleur. Très vite, celle-ci lui semble exprimer avec plus de tension dramatique, de poésie et de sensibilité la subtilité d’une atmosphère, d’un moment de la journée, d’une carnation – quand le noir et blanc réduit tout à une forme graphique.

En s’appuyant sur les images jumelles nées de cette surprenante pratique, Meyerowitz raconte avec brio ses années d’apprentissage, celles de l’un des grands pionniers de la photographie couleur.
