Lors de ses voyages en Europe entre 1966 et 1967, Joel Meyerowitz a passé six mois dans la ville de Málaga où il a eu l’occasion de connaître le monde du flamenco à fond grâce à son contact avec la famille Escalona et ses visites régulières à la Peña Juan Breva.

Pendant son séjour, le photographe a pris plus de 8500 photos et enregistré des heures de sons flamenco. Le Museo Picasso Málaga a programmé quatre sessions de flamenco en direct dans les galeries qui accueillent l’exposition temporaire, où la musique peut interagir avec les instantanés de Meyerowitz sur la scène du flamenco à Malaga dans les années 1960.
