Il y a quelques années, Joel Meyerowitz fut profondément impressionné par la visite de Paul Cézanne à Aix-en-Provence. Le peintre avait peint tous les murs de son studio de gris foncé, ce qui faisait que les objets présents dans la pièce semblaient comme absorbés par ce fond homogène. Meyerowitz réalisa que c’était ce qui permettait à Cézanne de changer rapidement son feu d’observation des objets en arrière-plan et vice versa, en évitant toute référence prospective. D’autre part, la rédaction des couleurs en échantillons plats est l’une des caractéristiques pour lesquelles la peinture de Cézanne reste encore incomparable.
Meyerowitz ressentit alors le désir de photographier ces objets et le fond magnétique que Cézanne avait conçu pour eux. Ayant obtenu la permission du Directeur de l’atelier, il choisit de photographier chaque objet sur la table de marbre du studio, en les plaçant tous au même endroit. Meyerowitz décida ensuite de placer les différents clichés en rangées, simulant ainsi que les objets étaient placés sur l’étagère qui se trouvait au-dessus de la table. En utilisant ensuite cinq de ces rangées, chacune composée de cinq objets, le photographe a créé une mosaïque au centre de laquelle s’encadre le chapeau de Cézanne.
