La photographie de rue est spontanée, un instant saisi par l'objectif. « Bystander » retrace l'évolution d'un genre photographique né de l'énergie chaotique et des juxtapositions fortuites de la vie quotidienne dans la rue. Le décor peut être un trottoir bondé, un chemin de campagne, un parc, une station de métro ou un hall de cinéma – tout lieu public où les sujets du photographe sont absorbés par leurs pensées, soit à son insu, soit inconscients de sa présence.

Parmi les photographes de rue, on compte aussi bien des amateurs anonymes que certains des plus grands noms de l'histoire du médium : Atget, Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Kertész, Lartigue, Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, Alfred Stieglitz, Lisette Model, Gilles Peress, Robert Frank et Joel Meyerowitz. Cet ouvrage explore les points communs de ces photographes depuis 1839 et, ce faisant, révèle beaucoup sur l'évolution de l'art photographique et sa vision créative. Richement illustré d'exemples issus de collections publiques et privées des États-Unis et d'Europe, l'ouvrage est divisé en quatre parties : Atget et le XIXe siècle ; Cartier-Bresson et l'Europe au XXe siècle ; Walker Evans et l'Amérique d'avant-guerre ; Robert Frank et l'Amérique d'après-guerre.

Colin Westerbeck est conservateur adjoint du département de photographie de l'Art Institute of Chicago et auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur le sujet.
Joel Meyerowitz, aujourd'hui surtout connu pour ses photographies couleur grand format, a débuté sa carrière comme photographe de rue.
