Les remarquables images d'archives rassemblées ici sont la seule trace photographique existant sur l'état de Ground Zero au lendemain du 11 septembre 2001 et des attentats contre le World Trade Center. Assimilée à une scène de crime, cette enceinte clôturée était alors fermée à tout photographe, et les renseignements sur ce qui se déroulait dans ce qu'on a alors appelé la " cité interdite " étaient rares. Par sa seule obstination, contraint presque quotidiennement à imaginer des stratagèmes pour déjouer les contrôles, Joel Meyerowitz fut le seul photographe à être présent de manière continue sur le site et à l'avoir vu passer, en l'espace de neuf mois, de l'état de chaos total à celui de terrain déblayé et assaini. Publié à l'occasion du cinquième anniversaire de la tragédie du World Trade Center, cet ouvrage est un hommage à la fois aux milliers de personnes qui y laissèrent leur vie, aux efforts inlassables et à la bravoure des innombrables policiers, pompiers, ouvriers du bâtiment, ingénieurs et bénévoles qui participèrent aux opérations de nettoyage. Présentées dans un large format, ces images de dévastation matérielle et de force morale - ponctuées de souvenirs personnels et de témoignages recueillis sur place - attestent les instants de courage, de compassion et de solidarité.
