Cet ouvrage est le dernier livre de Sebastião Salgado et s’inscrit dans 2025 Année de la préservation des Glaciers initiée par l’Unesco alors que 2024 fut l’année la plus chaude jamais enregistrée. La disparition progressive des glaciers entraîne la perte culturelle de panoramas inestimables, éblouissants dans leur majesté, qui ont fasciné des générations de voyageurs, d’artistes, de poètes et de photographes.
Mais les glaciers sont avant tout, des éléments fondamentaux dans la régulation du cycle hydrologique et du climat local et mondial, ils sont vivants et favorisent la vie. Deux milliards de personnes dépendent d’eux pour l’approvisionnement en eau potable et les deux tiers de l’agriculture irriguée mondiale.
Avec ce livre Sebastião Salgado nous propose le récit dramatique d’une lente disparition des neiges éternelles en saisissant à travers de nombreuses expéditions la beauté époustouflante de ces sites. Son écriture photographique et son langage original sont immédiatement reconnaissables, basés sur un noir et blanc et des gris subtils grâce à des lumières et des cadrages qu’il maîtrise parfaitement. De la péninsule antarctique au Canada, de la Patagonie à l’Himalaya, de la Géorgie du Sud à la Russie, la plupart des photographies de cet ouvrage ne sont nullement une dénonciation ou des effets faciles. C’est juste la beauté poignante de ces paysages comme des paradis en perdition, le silence des étendues blanches où se profilent des ombres noires qui nous émeuvent et nous terrifient en même temps.Si l’homme est absent, sa présence implicitement destructrice nous interpelle, nous obligeant à réagir car il est sans doute encore temps de rétablir une forme d’amour avec notre planète.
Le livre est enrichi d’un essai d’Elisa Palazzi, climatologue et professeur au département de physique de l’université de Turin.
