Quand Sebastião Salgado est finalement autorisé à visiter Serra Pelada, en septembre 1986, après six années de refus des autorités militaires brésiliennes, il n’est pas préparé au spectacle ahurissant qui l’attend en bordure de forêt amazonienne, aux confins meurtris de cette montagne pelée: un trou béant, profond et large de 200 mètres, où grouillent des dizaines de milliers d’hommes presque nus. La moitié remonte des sacs qui pèsent jusqu’à 40 kilos par des échelles en bois, les autres glissent sur les pentes boueuses pour replonger dans la gueule sale de la mine. Leurs corps et leurs visages sont ocres, oxydés par le minerai de fer comme cette terre qu’ils excavent.
Lorsqu’on trouva de l’or dans un des ruisseaux de Serra Pelada, en 1979, le petit village devint un temps l’Eldorado tant promis, la plus grande mine d’or à ciel ouvert du monde, où quelque 50.000 hommes s’épuisaient dans des conditions épouvantables. Aujourd’hui, la ruée vers l’or la plus sauvage qu’ait connue le Brésil appartient à la légende, qu’on entretient avec quelques souvenirs heureux, des regrets amers, et les photos de Sebastião Salgado.
Au moment où Salgado prit ces photos, la couleur régnait en maître dans les pages glacées des magazines. Si le noir et blanc était un parti pris risqué, la série consacrée à Serra Pelada inaugura un retour en grâce de la photo monochrome, s’inscrivant dans une tradition dont les maîtres, d’Edward Weston à Brassaï en passant par Robert Capa et Henri Cartier-Bresson, définirent la grande première moitié du XXe siècle. Quand le New York Times Magazine reçut les photos de Salgado, il se produisit quelque chose d’extraordinaire: un silence complet. «De toute ma carrière au New York Times, se souvient le rédacteur photo Peter Howe, je n’ai jamais vu de rédacteurs en chef réagir ainsi à un ensemble de photographies.»
À l’heure où la photo est absorbée par le monde de l’art et la manipulation numérique, le travail de Salgado est investi d’une qualité quasi-biblique et génère une sensation d’immédiateté qui le rend éminemment contemporain. La mine de la montagne pelée est certes fermée depuis longtemps, pourtant l’intensité dramatique de la ruée vers l’or jaillit toujours de ces images.
Cet ouvrage rassemble le portfolio de Salgado sur Serra Pelada dans son intégralité, reproduit selon les techniques les plus perfectionnées, accompagné d’un avant-propos du photographe et d’un essai d’Alan Riding.
