Il a témoigné de la vie quotidienne des Yanomami, des Asháninka, des Yawanawá, des Suruwahá, des Zo’é, des Kuikuro, des Waurá, des Kamayurá, des Korubo, des Marubo, des Awá et des Macuxi : de la chaleur de leurs liens familiaux, de leurs chasses et de leurs pêches, de leur façon de préparer et partager les repas, de leur merveilleux talent pour se peindre le visage et le corps, de l’importance de leurs chamanes, de leurs danses et de leurs rituels.
Sebastião Salgado a dédié ce livre aux peuples indigènes de la région amazonienne du Brésil: «Je souhaite, de tout mon cœur, de toute mon énergie, de tout ce qui vit intensément en moi, que d’ici à cinquante ans ce livre ne ressemble pas à un registre d’un monde perdu.
