En 1986, Sebastião Salgado a entamé une série de reportages sur le travail manuel, à travers les différents continents. Ce travail a été conçu pour raconter l’histoire d’une époque. Ces images offrent l’archéologie visuelle de l’ère industrielle, époque où femmes et hommes, par leur travail, tenaient entre leurs mains l’axe central du monde.

La sophistication et l’augmentation brutale de la production internationale a une limite: le monde surdéveloppé produit uniquement pour ceux qui peuvent consommer. Les autres, qui devraient théoriquement profiter de ce spectaculaire surplus de la production, ne parviennent pas à trouver le chemin de la consommation.

La destinée des femmes et des hommes est de créer un monde neuf, de faire ressurgir la vie, de rappeler que cette limite ne doit pas être franchie. A l’exception des rêves, qui permettent de s’adapter, de résister et de croire.
