Engagé en 1976 par Francis Ford Coppola comme photographe de plateau pour son chef-d'œuvre Apocalypse Now, l'archive privée de Chas Gerretsen, composée de centaines de photographies, propulse immédiatement le lecteur dans le chaos et le drame qui entourent l'un des films les plus importants jamais réalisés.

Gerretsen était un photographe indépendant renommé qui avait déjà travaillé au Vietnam lorsqu'il a reçu l'appel de Coppola, qui recherchait un photographe de combat pour un film de guerre. Bénéficiant d'un accès sans précédent aux stars du film, aux figurants, à l'équipe et aux coulisses légendaires, il a passé six mois aux Philippines, réalisant des milliers d'images. Tirées de ces archives, ces photographies en couleur offrent un aperçu intime de l'agitation et de l'excitation d'un spectacle hollywoodien né du climat imprévisible de la forêt tropicale philippine. Capturant le pouvoir des stars - Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen et Dennis Hopper - ainsi que les immenses décors, il nous fait découvrir la beauté de la jungle d'Asie du Sud-Est et nous montre comment ses habitants ont été intégrés au tournage. Tout au long du livre, les réflexions astucieuses de Gerretsen sur son expérience sur le plateau sont aussi fascinantes que ses photographies. Si Apocalypse Now reste l'un des films les plus acclamés par la critique de tous les temps, la réalisation du film est tout aussi légendaire. Près de cinquante ans plus tard, les photographies de Gerretsen nous rappellent les réalisations artistiques de Coppola et une époque charnière de l'histoire culturelle américaine.
