Soi 1 est le premier livre du photographe japonais Kotaro Yokomizo. Il s’agit d’une collection de photographies prises à Chiang Mai, en Thaïlande, là où le photographe vit actuellement.

Il se promène tous les jours dans la ville et dans les “Soi” (ตรอก), terme utilisé en Thaïlande pour appeler une petite rue. À Chiang Mai, ces rues ont été créées au 14ème siècle lorsque l’agriculture s’est développée, et, sont reliées aux temples où les communautés se réunissent.

En prenant des photographies, Kotaro Yokomizo crée une carte de la ville, et la met à jour, la ville changeant très rapidement.

Ses images sont le témoignage d’un temps et d’un lieu, de la singularité de la ville mais aussi de ses similitudes avec d’autres lieux. Le photographe s’intéresse à la distance entre les choses, à la nature humaine mais aussi aux cicatrices laissées par l’histoire ; photos en n.b.
