SINK / RISE est le troisième chapitre de The Day May Break, la série mondiale en cours de Nick Brandt décrivant les personnes et les animaux qui ont été touchés par la dégradation et la destruction de l'environnement. Ce troisième chapitre se concentre sur les insulaires du Pacifique Sud touchés par le changement climatique et constitue un rappel brutal de la réalité imminente à laquelle de nombreux îles sont confrontées. Les populations locales sur ces photos, photographiées sous l'eau dans l'océan au large des îles Fidji, symbolisent les nombreuses personnes qui risquent de perdre leurs habitats, leurs terres et leurs moyens de subsistance dans les décennies à venir à mesure que l'eau monte.
Les images, toutes prises à huis clos sous l’eau, sont d’une beauté envoûtante. Mais au-delà de l’impact visuel immédiat, le travail de Brandt va plus loin en se demandant : comment en sommes-nous arrivés là ? Quel avenir pour ces communautés ? Et comment pouvons-nous atténuer, voire inverser, les dégâts ? Les portraits emphatiques de Brandt jettent un pont sur le concept souvent abstrait du changement climatique et rappellent que derrière chaque statistique sur l’élévation du niveau de la mer se cache une histoire humaine tangible.
