Certains des modèles de Nick Brandt sont des êtres humains, d'autres des animaux, mais tous sont des créatures égales et dotées d'une personnalité évidente. L'impression dominante qui se dégage de la série mondiale du photographe, The Day May Break, est qu'ils cherchent tous à vivre dans un monde nouveau. Chacun est arrivé à la prise de vue dans la réserve naturelle de Senda Verde, en Bolivie, après avoir vécu sa propre tragédie. Des sécheresses et des inondations extrêmes ont détruit les maisons et les moyens de subsistance des habitants. Victimes de la destruction de leur habitat et du trafic d'animaux sauvages, les animaux sont des rescapés qui ne pourront jamais être relâchés dans la nature. Les personnes et les animaux ont été photographiés dans le même cadre et transmettent un sentiment de connexion à travers un destin partagé. Le brouillard est l'élément visuel unificateur, symbole du monde naturel qui s'estompe rapidement et écho de la fumée des incendies de forêt, intensifiée par le changement climatique, qui dévaste une grande partie de la planète. Mais en dépit de leur perte, ces personnes et ces animaux sont des survivants, des pionniers qui entrent dans la nouvelle phase que notre monde a atteinte. Dans The Day May Break, ils partagent leurs puissants récits.
