En 1972, à l’âge de 26 ans, Gilles Peress a photographié le massacre de civils irlandais par l’armée britannique lors du Bloody Sunday. Dans les années 1980, il est retourné en Irlande du Nord, avec l’intention de tester les limites du langage visuel et de la perception pour comprendre ce conflit inextricable.

Whatever You Say, Say Nothing, une œuvre de « fiction documentaire », organise une décennie de photographies à travers 22 « jours » fictifs pour articuler la structure hélicoïdale de l’histoire pendant un conflit qui semblait ne jamais devoir se terminer – où chaque jour se répétait, semblable aux autres : jours de violence, de marche, d’émeutes, de chômage, de deuil, et aussi de « craic » où l’on essaie d’oublier sa condition.

Retenue pendant 30 ans et maintenant attendue avec impatience, cette édition spéciale pousse le langage de la photographie documentaire à l’extrême, et met le lecteur au défi de s’arrêter et de résoudre lui-même le puzzle du sens.
