Au cours de plus de cinquante ans, Josef Koudelka (né en Moravie, en République tchèque, en 1938) a tenu soixante-neuf journaux intimes. Rassemblés aujourd’hui en un seul ouvrage richement illustré, Josef Koudelka : Diaries offre un aperçu de l’esprit de ce photographe tchèque iconoclaste réputé pour sa vie en exil et une carrière qui comprend des projets légendaires sur les Roms, l’invasion de Prague par les Soviétiques en 1968 et l’impact dévastateur de l’homme sur le paysage. Des fac-similés de pages tirées des journaux intimes, ainsi que des images du photographe, dont des autoportraits, confèrent à l’ouvrage un caractère immédiat et authentique.

Comme l’écrit le conservateur Tomáš Pospěch, « les journaux intimes de Koudelka sont un “livre de recettes” de la photographie classique. Il a côtoyé les photographes les plus renommés. Ses notes résument sa riche expérience, y compris son travail réalisé avec la technologie désormais en voie de disparition de la photographie analogique en noir et blanc. Ses remarques, ses boutades et ses anecdotes réapparaissent, tout comme il prenait sans cesse de nouvelles résolutions, affirmait les règles qu’il avait adoptées et se remémorait des événements passés et ses rêves. » Tout au long du livre sont révélées les réflexions de Koudelka sur des photographes tels que Henri Cartier-Bresson, ainsi que sur les éditeurs, les conservateurs et ses amis, notamment Robert Delpire et Anna Fárová, ainsi que des notes sur certaines de ses images les plus diffusées.
