Les travaux de jeunesse du doyen de la photographie italienne dressent un portrait saisissant de l'Italie des années 1950.
Après plus de soixante ans, un voyage dominical dans le delta du Pô devient un portrait mémorable d'une Italie pauvre presque oubliée, balayée par les années de boom économique qui ont suivi. Nino Migliori n'était pas encore un photographe professionnel, mais sa curiosité débridée pour les lieux, les situations et les gens était déjà manifeste. Le delta du Pô, une zone périphérique avec un niveau de pauvreté considéré comme endémique, est ici capturé dans des clichés qui montrent la coexistence difficile entre l'homme et la nature. Un élément clé est la relation avec le fleuve, mais ce qui ressort des photos, ce sont les routes encore non pavées, les intérieurs humbles et dénudés et les enfants qui ressemblent à des adultes miniatures. Un garçon sur une Vespa est un signe avant-coureur d'un mieux-être naissant. Des « documents historiques lyriques », comme les définit Vasco Brondi en introduction. L'ouvrage contient également des textes critiques de Corrado Benigni et Mauro Zanchi.
