À l'automne 1974, Gae Aulenti a participé à un voyage en Chine, visitant Hong Kong (encore une colonie à l'époque), Pékin, Shanghai, Nanjing et quelques localités plus petites. Après les années de la Révolution culturelle, la Chine s'ouvre au monde et la voyageuse curieuse et infatigable qu'elle est est frappée par la vie collective très disciplinée, l'ordre et la propreté, mais aussi par les grandes transformations du territoire et les nouvelles infrastructures telles que les universités et les hôpitaux. C'est un monde suspendu entre des traditions millénaires et l'élan de modernisation que l'idéologie de Mao Zedong a imposé au pays. Mais c'est encore la Chine des bicyclettes, des mille boutiques et de la Grande Muraille que l'on visite sans la présence des touristes. Un lieu à certains égards lointain et exotique, mais Aulenti prend soin de saisir les prémices de la Chine à venir. Un reportage étonnant qui oscille entre les grands panoramas et les détails révélés par l'observation attentive.
