Au début des années 1960, Bruno Barbey, cherchant à dépeindre les Italiens, photographie toutes les couches de la société dans la rue comme dans les intérieurs. Le jeune photographe présente cet ensemble d’images à Robert Delpire qui propose aussitôt de les publier dans la série « Encyclopédie essentielle », une collection de livres juxtaposant textes et images, qui comprenait déjà Les Américains de Robert Frank (1958) et le projet Les Allemands de René Burri (1962).
Comme l’écrit Giosuè Calaciura dans sa préface, « Ces photos sont à la fois littérature et cinéma, compte-rendu des Italiens qui semble l’oeuvre d’un Italien, que ce soit Carlo Levi dans Les mots sont des pierres ou Luchino Visconti dans Rocco et ses frères. Ou encore Pasolini. En Italie, Bruno Barbey se sent homme du Sud parmi des hommes du Sud. Un sentiment affectueux d’appartenance transparaît dans ces clichés où l’on voit les individus tenter de renouer les fils rompus de la vie sociale et privée, de tourner la page après la parenthèse de la guerre qui a tout remis en cause en balayant les certitudes comme les désespoirs chroniques. Une occasion pour effacer ce que l’on était avec la promesse de ce qui sera. »
Les circonstances d’alors empêchent la réalisation du livre, mais le portfolio de photographies italiennes convainc les membres de l’agence Magnum Photos du potentiel du jeune Barbey, rapidement accepté dans la coopérative. Après des décennies de travail et de nombreux volumes sur d’autres pays, Barbey a finalement publié une première version de ce travail en 2002, avec une introduction de Tahar Ben Jelloun, depuis longtemps épuisée.
La présente édition est un retour à l’idée originale de Robert Delpire, dans un format réduit coïncidant avec l’édition Les Américains et la nouvelle parution Les Anglais, de Henri Cartier-Bresson et Martin Parr, ainsi que celle à venir Les Allemands.
