Pour Eric Facon le voyage s’annonçait épique et romantique, à pied et sans grands moyens, à la rencontre des derniers Fuégiens de la Patagonie chilienne. Une des premières étapes fut le village isolé de Puerto Eden, sur l’île de Wellington perdue au milieu des canaux et fjords de ce bout du monde. Eric Facon arrive avec une équipe de géomètres, chargée de préparer l’installation du réseau d’eau potable. Pour le photographe, il s’agit de rencontrer la communauté Kawéshkar, ancien peuple nomade, dont il ne reste que douze représentants. Le 9 juillet 1998, le lendemain de son arrivée, la mort de Julio Tonko, membre de cette communauté bouleversa les habitants de Puerto Eden et marqua profondément Eric Facon, qui photographia ses funérailles. Trop triste, il ne restait que onze personnes des Kawéshkar à présent, le photographe n’osa pas aller plus loin à leur rencontre. Il s’effaça.
