Les photographes Yves Marchand et Romain Meffre ont passé des mois à photographier la ville américaine de Detroit, ou plutôt ce qu’il en reste : un vaste champ de ruines : « Les ruines sont les symboles visibles et les repères de nos sociétés et de leur évolution. Elles sont une situation temporaire qui se produit à un moment donné, le résultat volatile d’un changement d’époque, de la chute des empires. »
Au début du xxe siècle, la ville de Detroit, au nord des États-Unis, s’est développée rapidement grâce à l’industrie automobile. Dans les années 50, sa population comptait presque deux millions de personnes. Motor City, qui était alors la quatrième ville des États-Unis en terme d’importance, a été le symbole éclatant du rêve américain. Mais l’augmentation de la ségrégation et la désindustrialisation ont provoqué, en 1967, l’une des émeutes les plus violentes que l’Amérique ait jamais connues, scellant la réputation de Detroit pour les prochaines décennies. En cinquante ans, la ville a perdu plus de la moitié de sa population. Aujourd’hui, certains intérieurs encore intacts témoignent de la disparition des habitants et de leur vie passée. Ces gratte-ciel en décomposition, ces théâtres, ces galeries, ces hôtels, ces églises et ces maisons ne représentent pas moins que les pyramides d’Égypte, le Colisée de Rome ou l’Acropole d’Athènes, ils sont comme les vestiges d’une civilisation en voie de disparition.
