Hashima est une petite île située au large de la côte sud-ouest du Japon, à une dizaine de kilomètres de Nagasaki. Sa silhouette en forme de navire de guerre lui a valu le surnom de Gunkanjima ("île cuirassée").
Pendant la vague d'industrialisation du XIXe siècle, un filon de charbon a été découvert sur l'île et la société Mitsubishi y a ouvert une mine. Les travailleurs se sont installés sur l'île et la population a augmenté, la petite ville minière devenant rapidement un établissement moderne et autonome. Dans les années 1950, Gunkanjima est devenu l'un des endroits les plus densément peuplés au monde avec plus de 5 000 habitants.
Mais après un accident et la restructuration du projet minier Mitsubishi, la mine a fermé en janvier 1974. Les derniers habitants ont déserté l'île, la liaison par bateau a été suspendue, et depuis lors, Gunkanjima est devenue une ville fantôme.
Marchand et Meffre ont photographié l'île entre 2008 et 2012.
