Pendant plus de trois décennies Toshio Shibata sillonne à la fois son Japon natal et les États-Unis pour photographier des paysages à l'intersection du monde naturel et du monde construit. À première vue, ces images portent toutes les marques des photographies de paysage traditionnelles: faites avec une chambre photographique, elles révèlent la manière dont nous sommes en train de transformer le paysage naturel. Et pourtant, au cours de sa carrière, Shibata a créé une oeuvre qui ne ressemble à aucune autre dans ce domaine photographique. La photographie de paysage contemporaine est souvent axée sur la transformation du paysage naturel à travers l'étalement urbain et notre soif inextinguible de ressources naturelles à exploiter. Plutôt que de pointer un doigt accusateur, ces images maintiennent une certaine distance avec leur sujet, tout en portant un message critique plus subtil, nous invitant à tour d'être sidérés par l'élan irrésistible d'une ville en pleine expansion ou consternés par un étalement urbain de plus en plus homogène. Ce faisant, elles installent une dichotomie entre l'homme et la nature comme deux forces qui s'opposent. Le sujet qu'a choisi Shibata, l'infrastructure, occupe ce même territoire et ses images partagent ce détachement du sujet qui caractérise la photographie de paysage contemporaine. Et pourtant, elles ne portent pas de message critique... elles sont plus mystérieuses, plus insaisissables. Elles nous invitent à les interpréter librement, avec la même liberté que celle du photographe lorsqu'il prend les routes de l'archipel nippon, restant ouvert à une rencontre fortuite avec le paysage. Shibata décrit son processus de prise de vue comme " l'emprunt d'un paysage " : ses images ne sont pas des photographies du paysage, mais des images faites à partir du paysage. Alors qu'elles documentent le monde qu'elles décrivent, ceci n'est pas leur fonction première. La nature exquise de ces compositions nous invite plutôt à regarder le monde d'un oeil nouveau et à remettre en question notre notion du paysage.
