Grand voyageur, Ralph Gibson aime à travailler par séries, par associations inspirées d’images, pour produire des rêveries monochromes ou en couleur dont les titres – The Somnambulist, Déjà-vu, Days at Sea ou Chiaroscuro – soulignent la sensibilité poétique particulière qui sous-tend son œuvre. Après des débuts en 1960 aux côtés de Dorothea Lange, il débarque à New York en 1967 et ne tarde pas à atteindre la même notoriété que Larry Clark et Diane Arbus.

Les photos et séries parlent bien sûr d’elles-mêmes. Cependant Gibson considère qu’une philosophie se joue derrière l’image et il présente sa thèse dans les textes brefs intégrés au recueil. Nus, portraits, natures mortes, documentaires : fidèle à son Leica, Gibson navigue entre les genres et crée de nouvelles catégories de vision. Il avance au plus près des choses et médite à leur propos d’une manière qui ne peut passer que par le silence de l’image.Réalisé en étroite collaboration avec l’artiste, ce livre présente le meilleur de plus de six décennies de création. Des premières photographies de Ralph Gibson à San Francisco, Hollywood et New York dans les années 1960 jusqu’à nos jours, cet ouvrage offre la collection la plus complète de ce photographe de grand renom.
