Ce livre est le fruit d’une collaboration jubilatoire : le réalisateur Lee Shulman, créateur de The Anonymous Project, a proposé à Omar Victor Diop, autoportraitiste sénégalais, de se glisser dans les photographies anonymes de sa collection de diapositives américaines des années 1950 et 1960. Images de célébrations ordinaires où l’on voit essentiellement des familles issues de la classe moyenne blanche et privilégiée poser à table pour fêter un anniversaire, à la plage, au milieu d’un barbecue ou devant leur rutilant pavillon. Diop s’immisce ainsi dans des univers où il n’a pas été invité, dans le contexte de l’Amérique ségrégationniste d’après-guerre, comme s’il avait toujours fait partie du cadre. Shulman et Diop proposent une nouvelle façon d’agiter les esprits et d’interroger les représentations, avec humour. Leur performance fonctionne comme un révélateur.
