Au début des années 1980 la France traverse une période mouvementée, avec l’infernale spirale du chômage, la montée du Front National et l'intensification des violences envers les immigrés.

C'est dans ce cadre que Philippe Chancel dresse le portrait d'une jeunesse de France métissée, dynamique et audacieuse. Des clichés d'une grande puissance qui illustrent le rêve d'une autre France des années 80 opposée au pitoyable spectacle que nous donnait à voir les prémices d'une odieuse campagne électorale.

À Paris,"le quadrilatère Nation, République, Grands boulevards, Gare de l’Est, marque leur territoire. Comme eux j’ai tout juste 20 ans. Blacks, Blancs, Beurs, belles gueules et mines fracassées se font face. L’histoire c’est celle des embrouilles, sur fond de sexe, de drogue, de Rockab’ et de glamour ; où l’on croise les Stray Cats jusqu'à plus d’heure aux soirées « grands boulevards » d’Albert. (...) C’est cette énergie brute que j’ai cherché à capter avec mon appareil photo, chargé à la Kodak Tri-X boostée par mon flash. Même si parfois j’agissais avec ruse et surprise, j’ai toujours exprimé vérité et sincérité à travers mes clichés... "

La France des années 80 c'est aussi et surtout celle de ce livre. La fameuse petite Histoire de France, celle dont on parlait peu ou pas dans les journaux. Le Front national démarrait son ascension qui l'a amené cette année à 42% aux élections présidentielles, les violences policières était au moins aussi prégnantes qu'en 2022, mais à cette époque on aimait avoir du style et l'assumer. C'est cette France là qui s'exprime à travers les photographies de Philippe Chancel. La nuit, tous les chats n'étaient pas gris, ils étaient blacks, blancs, beurs et fiers de l'être.
