Gülistan présente l'histoire de Kenan & Filiz, deux habitants d'Istanbul qui célébrèrent leur vie dans les plus grands établissements de la ville dans les années 1960 et 1970. Ces lieux proposaient des foto servisi où l'on pouvait se faire photographier puis ramener son portrait, glissé dans une enveloppe à la mode.

Gülistan offre une résistance subtile aux forces actuellement conservatrices en Turquie, illustrant une époque de pensée occidentale dans la capitale. Il offre également un aperçu unique du monde animé d'Istanbul à ce moment-là ainsi qu'une culture photographique très particulière qui fait partie intégrante des archives de chaque famille.
