Depuis plus de 60 ans, Alain Keler arpente le monde et ses fracas. Ses photographies interrogent les liens entre histoire et destins intimes, témoignant des tumultes du présent sur les visages. Du Liban à la Tchétchénie, de l’Iran au Salvador, ce témoin infatigable des conflits et révolutions s’attache au sort des exclus, des déracinés, des oubliés. Son noir et blanc à la poésie saisissante traverse les décennies, des grands bouleversements du monde à la chronique du quotidien. Cette monographie dévoile pour la première fois l’essentiel de son oeuvre : de ses images de jeunesse aux grands reportages pour les agences Sygma et Gamma; des séries au long cours sur les minorités de l’ex-bloc communiste ou sur la discrimination des Roms aux récits familiaux. Lauréat du World Press Photo en 1986 pour son travail en Ethiopie et du Prix Eugene Smith en 1997 pour son travail sur les minorités dans l’ex-bloc communiste, Keler explore sans relâche les résonnances entre mémoire collective et histoires personnelles.
