Sunless (Rouge)
Dans Sunless, Tiane Doan na Champassak est à la recherche de la beauté dans les frontières désagrégées entre homme et femme. Les images de Sunless, réalisées en Thaïlande en 2012 et 2013, représentent la seconde partie d'un travail en cours de plus grande ampleur, né de la nécessité permanente de confronter au travers de la photographie les questions du genre et de la sexualité.
Sunless expose toutes les nuances de ce qui est accepté comme homme ou femme dans la société d'aujourd'hui, et explore ce qui est considéré comme la norme en terme de genre et de sexualité. Alors que l'homosexualité tend à être bien représentée dans la scène artistique contemporaine, très peu de place est laissée aux oeuvres qui traitent de la bisexualité et du transgenre. Les travaux photographiques sur ces thèmes sont confinés à une niche d'art militant qui atteint rarement une audience élargie – comme si la confrontation avec de tels travaux était trop dérangeante voire trop menaçante pour les individus et pour la société.
Le travail de Tiane Doan na Champassak est motivé par une fascination pour les problèmes d'identité de genre, et révèle une sensibilité très esthétique. Pour chaque projet, que ce soit des tirages d'exposition ou des livres en édition limitée, il est toujours en quête des techniques, des matériaux et des formats les plus appropriés. Dans Sunless, des rencontres sexuelles transgressives ont été fixées par le photographe sur du papier Ilfochrome, intercalées avec des impressions purement monochromes de l'architecture urbaine où ces personnes sont enracinées. En conséquence, Sunless repousse les limites de l'impression Offset à l'extrême et essaye de reproduire fidèlement les tirages sur Ilfochrome en utilisant des encres à haute pigmentation avec un vernis de sérigraphie, juxtaposés à de grandes images en duotone et vernis mat.
