Midcentury Memories est le second livre tiré deThe Anonymous Project, lancé en 2017 par Lee Shuman.
Tout commence un peu par hasard, lorsque ce réalisateur achète sur Ebay une série de diapositivies Kodachrome 35 mm, toutes prises par des anonymes. Saisi par ce qu'il nomme "la valeur émotionnelle de ces tranches de vie", il décide d'élargir l'audience de ces images et sa collection. Depuis, ce sont plus de 70 000 photographies qui ont été rassemblées, sur lesquelles sujets et photographes partagent une intimité empreinte de tendresse.

Dans Midcentury Memory, un peu moins de 300 images prises entre les années 1940 et 1970 offrent un aperçu intime de la vie de quelques uns de ces sujets anonymes. Deux copains qui montrent leurs prises sur leur petit canot de pêche, un petit garçon qui exhibe fièrement son costume de cowboy, une fâme aux lunettes rétro qui se repose sous l'ombre d'un cèdre, ce sont ainsi des scènes au charme surranné, au grain peut-être nostalgique.

Ce livre a aussi le mérite de tracer une autre histoire : la petite histoire, composée de ces mille trajectoires distinctes, de ces instants immortalisés qui témoignent de la force documentaire et esthétique de la photographie vernaculaire.
