Publié en 1963, ce livre est la toute première publication de Sergio Larrain, et deviendra rapidement l’ouvrage de référence de la photographie chilienne et sud-américaine. Publié dans la collection Cadernos Brasileiros, grâce au poète et attaché culturel brésilien Thiago de Mello, il expose avec subtilité, en 44 pages, sa vision de la photographie. Pour la première fois, Sergio Larrain réfléchit à son travail d’un point de vue théorique. « La photographie : ce (le sujet) qui est donné par la géométrie ». Cette définition, conçue comme un syllogisme, et à laquelle se mêle un avant-goût de haïku, traduit l’esprit qui l’animait alors, et qu’il reprendra plus tard dans ses livres de réflexion philosophique. Rééditée en un fac-similé fidèle à l’édition originale, cette version d’El rectángulo en la mano, proposée sous coffret et avec un texte critique d’Agnès Sire, est un hommage à l’ouvrage emblématique du photographe chilien.
