De son émergence dans les clubs noirs et gay de New York à son explosion populaire au milieu des années 1970, jusqu’à l’apparition de l’épidémie de sida et au retour moral incarné par Ronald Reagan, l’ouvrage célèbre la fulgurance et les bouleversements collectifs et intimes de l’ère disco. Riche de documents d’époque, d’œuvres d’artistes et de textes de spécialistes, il témoigne aussi de l’empreinte qu’elle a laissée sur les technologies et les arts, la mode ou le design.

De la culture queer au féminisme, de l’avènement du DJ à la naissance de la culture club, de la safe place à la notion de genre, l’héritage disco imprègne et préfigure nos sociétés contemporaines, et les questionnements brûlants qui les animent.
