Larry Clark est retourné à sa ville natale de Tulsa à 20 ans après deux années de service au Vietnam. Il passe des amphétamines à l’héroïne et bouleverse la photographie documentaire traditionnelle en tournant son objectif sur lui-même et son entourage, produisant une série de photographies brutes et intimes qui chroniquent la désintégration du rêve américain.

Les images profondément intimes de Clark ont exposé la vie inédite d’adolescents américains de banlieue, vivant un style de vie transgressif et hors-la-loi, traînant sur des matelas de fortune et commettant des cambriolages et des vols à main armée pour obtenir de la drogue. Un petit nombre de ces photographies formeront « Tulsa », une pierre angulaire de la photographie contemporaine.

Cinquante ans plus tard, Larry Clark est revenu à son archive de tirages vintage, élaborant une vision puissante de son travail de 1962-1973, pour produire son nouveau livre « Return », une monographie méticuleusement imprimée, qui est aussi provocante aujourd’hui qu’elle ne l’a jamais été, même à un moment où la dépendance aux opioïdes est plus répandue que jamais.
