A l’est de nulle part nous propose une vision poétique de la persévérance humaine et montre la réalité de la vie quotidienne en Europe centrale et orientale avant et après la chute du mur de Berlin.
En 1987, Fabio Ponzio se lance dans une odyssée photographique à travers l'Europe centrale, orientale et le Caucase. Partant d'Istanbul, il se dirige vers la Pologne et découvre au fil de son voyage les magasins vides, les longues files d'attente pour acheter les produits de première nécessité et des pays sur le point de s'écrouler. A l'automne 1989, alors que les différents régimes des pays communistes, de Budapest à Bucarest, commencent à s'effondrer, tout change.
Au fil des ans, équipé d'un Leica, de trois Nikon et de 100 rouleaux de film, Fabio Ponzio est retourné inlassablement dans les villages et les villes de l’Europe de l’Est, s’efforçant de documenter les multiples visages des peuples de cette région et les innombrables facettes de leur existence. Ses images témoignent de la pauvreté endémique et de l’oppression généralisée qui marquèrent les dernières années des régimes communistes, et du mélange d’énergie, d’espoir, d’incertitude et de désolation absolue provoqué par leur effondrement. Son œuvre nous offre une vision poignante et extrêmement empathique de l’existence humaine – des traditions et de la foi profonde, de l’humilité et du courage, du sacrifice et de l’instinct de survie de ces populations de l’Est.
A partir d’un ensemble de photographies jamais publiées jusqu’alors mais primées, A l’est de nulle part apporte un éclairage inédit sur les frontières physiques et idéologiques existant entre l'Europe occidentale et orientale.
