Cet album, coédité par Actes Sud et Hermès, se propose d’aborder la thématique du sport dans l’œuvre foisonnante de Jacques Henri Lartigue à travers une sélection d’images issues de ses fameux albums. Cet ouvrage qui se veut un hommage à l’esthétique si novatrice de Lartigue entend aussi fournir des éléments d’analyse du développement de l’histoire du sport car, à l’évidence, la notion de sport telle que nous l’appréhendons aujourd’hui n’a que bien peu à voir avec les premiers temps d’une ère nouvelle magistralement documentée par le photographe.
Pour aborder cet éclairage particulier, l’historien du sport Thierry Terret, professeur à l’université de Lyon 1 et directeur du Centre d’innovation et de recherches sur le sport, met ici en perspective la sélection retenue en l’organisant autour de cinq thèmes qui déploient les questions passionnantes liées à l’émergence du sport comme pratique individuelle et réalité sociale. Anne-Marie Garat vient également porter son regard sur cet ensemble photographique pour en révéler toute la sensibilité et l'élégance, faisant résonner ainsi le "la" majeur de cet ouvrage.
