Momentum, la mécanique de l’épreuve » est la première grande exposition de JR au sein d’une institution française (Maison Européenne de la Photographie / du 7 novembre 2018 au 10 février 2019) . . Elle rassemble notamment les premières photographies de l’artiste, des collages de format monumental de ses plus grands projets, et plusieurs installations inédites.

Cet ouvrage est le reflet de cette exposition. Il questionne la question de la mécanique de l’image dans le travail de JR. Sa fabrication fait appel à différentes techniques d’impression, de reliure et de transparence de papiers. Quatre membres de l’Oulipo, groupe d’écrivains et de mathématiciens fondé en 1960 par Raymond Queneau et François Le Lionnais, viennent rythmer son édition par des textes en résonance avec le travail de JR. Ceux qui se définissent comme des « rats qui construisent eux-mêmes le labyrinthe dont ils se proposent de sortir » apportent ainsi à l’ouvrage une dimension supplémentaire.
