En 1963, l'auteur Yukio Mishima et le photographe Eikoh Hosoe terminent leur collaboration Ba.Ra.Kei (Killed by roses), composée à la fois de performances photographiques et de portraits de Yukio Mishima. L'édition originale conçue par Kohei Sugiura et publiée par Shueisha, établira l'esthétique éditoriale des trois suivantes, sorties en 1971, 1984 et 1985.
En 1984, Shueisha re-édite pour la troisième fois Ba.Ra.Kei-Ordeal by roses en reproduisant fidèlement la publication de 1963, rendant de nouveau disponible l'un des livres photos les plus intriguants du 20e siècle.
